The Gaza Crisis

The Israel ground attack on the Gaza strip began on Saturday, till now it has claimed at least 110 lives. Ten days have passed since the conflict has started; the life is becoming intolerable in Gaza. Israel in the past years has faced rocket attacks from the Palestinian militants. Now Israel has started a ground offensive against the militant in hope of ending the rocket attacks. Israel says that it has killed 130 Hamas fighters and has denied claims that Hamas has killed 10 of its soldiers. A UN official report says that at least 25% of the 560 Palestinians who were killed in the attacks are civilians. The Israel on its defence has accused Hamas is using civilians as a human shield and hence the civilian casualities. Israel has said that it is so far been successful in stopping militants firing rockets , but at least five missiles hit southern Israel on Tuesday. The UN has warned that the crisis in Gaza may worsen due to the difficulty faced in getting the aid in to the territory. A full blown humanitarian crisis is faced by Gaza. Israel has said that it would accept a cease fire agreement it provided provisions for preventing re- arming of Hamas in the future.

  1. According to Fisk in the Independent, the Israeli civilian dead in nine years numbers twenty - the Palestinian dead in one day has been 200. Their death toll just goes on though. Seems an extreme case of an eye for an eye.

  2. Proportion is not the point here, I think. I think this is Isreal's way of saying "screw it, since the rest of the world doesn't seem to care that Hamas is launching rockets over our borders, we will disable their ability to do so."

Funny, I don't remember a global movement to try and stop Hamas from launching rockets into Isreal before they began their ground offensive. The world just sat back and ignored the Hamas violence...but God forbid Isreal take matters into their own hands.

In the future, the civilians living in Gaza might want to think about whether or not they want elect into power a group that will use them as human shields.
